The following budget travel option to Nozawa Onsen from Tokyo will save you around 50% (¥5,000) compared to taking the faster, more direct train/bus options.

1. From Shinjuku bus terminal in Tokyo, take the comfortable Willer Express bus to Nagano station (5 hour journey – priced from ¥2,300, although prices may be higher in busy periods).
2. From Nagano station, take the JR Iiyama line train to Iiyama station (1 hour journey – ¥700 pp).
3. From Iiyama station, take the Nozawa Onsen Liner bus to Nozawa Onsen (20 minute journey – ¥600 pp).
Total: ¥3,900-¥5,400 per adult

This option is slower than our recommended way to get from Tokyo to Nozawa Onsen, however it is much cheaper, more scenic/interesting if you have time.

The fastest way from Tokyo to Nozawa Onsen is by Bullet train from Tokyo or Ueno station to Iiyama station, 1hour 40 minutes (¥8,780 pp)
From Iiyama station, take the Nozawa Onsen Liner bus to Nozawa Onsen (20 minute journey – ¥600).
Total: ¥9,380 per adult.

There is also a direct bus from Narita and Haneda Airports which is a similar price to taking the bullet train. It takes longer than the bullet train option, however it is more convenient if you are traveling with a lot of luggage.
